SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State freshman William Opare has been named the Lone Star Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, the league announced Monday.
In addition to the LSC Honor, Opare was also named the USTFCCCA Men's National Track Athlete of the Year.
Opare, a native of Accra, Ghana, scored a meet-high 21.5 points at the LSC Indoor Championships. He won conference titles in the 200 meters (20.89 seconds) and 400 meters (45.95) and contributed to the Rams’ 4x400-meter relay.
He carried that momentum to the national stage, winning the NCAA Division II title in the 400 meters and helping Angelo State’s 4x400 relay as the anchor leg. Opare also placed second nationally in the 200 meters.
Opare finished as the top point scorer at the national meet with 20.5 points, leading the Rams to a fourth-place team finish.
He becomes the second Angelo State athlete to earn the conference’s indoor track athlete of the year honor and the first since 2023. Under head coach Tom Dibbern, Angelo State athletes have now earned eight indoor track and field athlete of the year awards.
Angelo State will host the David Noble Relays this week, with competition scheduled Thursday through Saturday in San Angelo.
