GODLEY, TX — The Brownwood Lions found themselves in a hole early but fought through overtime and a shootout to emerged victorious against the Lake Worth Bullfrogs in the area round of the soccer playoffs.
Back on March 12, the Lions and Bullfrogs had themselves a warmup game for the playoffs which the Lions won, 2-0. The area round proved early on to be different.
Brownwood’s Hudson Fry had not given up a goal in over a month, but Lake Worth found the net only about seven minutes into the game. It wasn’t until after halftime that the Lions would tie things up with a goal of their own when Issac Morales scored less than five minutes into the second half.
Then, with just over 20 minutes left, Brownwood encountered some adversity as it received a red card and had to play a man down the rest of the game. Nonetheless, regulation ended with the score tied, 1-1.
The game went through two 10-minute overtime periods, and the shootouts began. The Bullfrogs scored first, then Brownwood’s Aiden Jimenez tied it up. On Lake Worth’s second attempt, Fry had a save, which was the difference. Even though Lake Worth would be successful on the remaining three kicks, so were the Lions behind the legs of Jermiah Chacon, Alex Vaquera, Eli Valenciano and Morales, who scored the game winner.
So, after 100 minutes of play and a shootout, the Lions survived and advanced to the regional semifinals for the second year in a row.
Brownwood will play El Paso Bowie in the upcoming game Friday, March 27, at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa. Bowie placed second in its district and has a 22-4 record. The Bears have scored a monstrous 106 goals this season and have only given up 15.
