LEANDER, TX — The Garden City Bearkats erased an eight-shot deficit to leapfrog from fourth place to a state championship Tuesday at the UIL Class 1A Boys State Golf Tournament.
While most of the teams shot higher than their first-round score, Garden City shot lower.
The Bearkats followed up a 361 on Monday with a 356 on Tuesday for a total of 717, which was seven shots ahead of runners-up Wildorado and Knippa.
For first-round leader Robert Lee, however, the Steers couldn’t follow up with another strong round to bring home a state title.
Robert Lee’s 353 on Monday gave way to a 380 on Tuesday that left the Steers in a tie for sixth place.
The best score to come from the Concho Valley was Blackwell’s Brayden Claborn, who tied for fourth at 82-80—162.
Wildorado’s Hunter Corman won the individual title with a 74-73—147, four shots ahead of Texline’s Bo Bradley (77-74—151).
Garden City’s scores were Brik Fryar (91-81—172), Karson Lowery (89-89—178), Waylyn Davis (87-92—179), Cohen Batla (94-94—188) and Rylan Cypert (106-98—204).
Robert Lee’s scores were Brenner Sherwood (84-85—169), Zach Eubanks (96-90—186), Levi Bailey (88-101—189), Max Garcia (85-104—189) and Ryder Tavarez (116-111—227).
The 1A state tournament was played at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander.
Wall Finishes Second at 3A State Tournament
The Wall Hawks weren’t able to hang onto a first-round lead as Gunter charged back to win the 3A state title at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.
Wall left a little room for a comeback after following a 304 on Monday with a 312 on Tuesday. Gunter took advantage by shooting a 306 to win the team title by three shots after beginning the day three shots behind Wall.
Gunter’s Austin Anderson also won the individual title after firing back-to-back rounds of 68 for a five-stroke victory over Nacogdoches Central Heights’ Andrew Bird (68-73—141).
Wall’s Maxwell Wymore tied for sixth at 73-74—147, followed by Stratten Abel (76-77—153), Cannon Willard (76-81—157), Kasen Hudson (79-80—159) and Cash Yocham (92-92—184).
Mason Takes Third at 2A State Tournament
The Mason Punchers improved on their first-round score Monday to finish in third place at the 2A state tournament at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.
Mason began the day one shot out of third place. The Punchers shot a 307 on Tuesday, which was three shots better than Monday, to pass Lipan by five shots.
Mildred won the team title at 299-298—597 for an eight-shot victory over Crawford (303-302—605).
Tioga’s Zander Zafar emerged from a three-way tie for first to win the individual title at 67-68—135, holding off Farwell’s Cooper Nichols (70-66—136) and Sundown’s Isaiah Igo (67-69—136) by one shot.
Mason’s Cade Dudney led the Punchers with a score of 76-72—148, followed by Kaden Langehennig (74-77—151), Hudson Terrell (80-78—158), Grant Nobles (82-80—162) and Ryder Balmos (80-86—166).
Also representing the Concho Valley were Sonora’s Jayden Welborn (81-82—163) and Reagan County’s John Hodge (81-84—165).
