AUSTIN, TX — The Angelo State University baseball team outlasted St. Edward's, 3-2, in a 10-inning thriller on Easter Sunday in Austin.
With the win, the Rams secured a series split against the Hilltoppers while improving to 25-13.
ASU opened the scoring in the third inning when Tate Greene drove in Chase Pendley with an RBI groundout after Pendley led off the frame with a double.
St. Edward's answered in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly to even the score.
The Rams regained the lead in the fifth. With runners on second and third, Greene delivered again with his second RBI groundout of the game to make it 2-1.
The Hilltoppers forced extra innings in the ninth. With runners on first and third, St. Edward's executed a double steal. The Rams recorded the out at second but could not prevent the run from scoring at home.
ASU responded in the 10th. Greene reached third on an infield single and an errant pickoff attempt before Austin Beck laid down a bunt, bringing home the go-ahead run.
Garrett Baumann closed the door, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings while allowing one hit and striking out three to earn the win.
Luke Spencer turned in a standout performance on the mound for ASU, delivering the longest start by a Rams pitcher this season. The senior right hander went 8 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.
The Rams will now return home, where they will host West Texas A&M in a four-game series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
