Lake View Drops Tough Contest in the Area Around

ABILENE, TX — The Lake View Chiefs saw their season come to an end against Decatur in the Area Round in Abilene on Tuesday. A back-and-forth contest throughout, Decatur scored the go-ahead goal in the 68th minute to take down the Chiefs, 3-2.

"First of all, all praise to God," Head Coach Kyle Jones said after the game. "He blessed us and put us in the position to play. We knew they would be a great opponent coming into this game. We knew they would push us to our limit. [Decatur] is big, fast and physical. But these boys played as hard as they could. They left everything out on the field."

Twice in this contest, Lake View proved how resilient they are as a team. Twice, the Chiefs found an equalizer. Lake View fought till the very end, but simply ran out of time.

Decatur jumped on the board midway through the first half after neither team found much success in the first 20 minutes. A deflection allowed the Eagles to slip a goal past the defense to take a 1-0 lead.

However, Giovanni Mendoza would give Lake View the first of the Chiefs' two equalizers in the contest. Mendoza took a deep pass and slammed the ball into the left side of the net from deep in the box to even up the score at 1-1 just three minutes into the second half.

The Eagles proved tough to handle. Every time Lake View found some space, Decatur proved to be too fast and too big to handle. The Eagles would retake the lead in the 56th minute with some excellent passing inside the box.

Not to be deterred, Mendoza continued his stellar performance with his second goal of the day, and second equalizer, after Decatur's goalkeeper mishandled a routine save. He dropped the ball, and Mendoza pounced. He scored seconds later and tied it at 2-2 with 15 minutes to play.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, it seemed Decatur would not be denied. The Eagles retook the lead just three minutes later to go back up 3-2.

After that, the Chiefs had several opportunities for another goal, but Decatur pulled everyone back on defense and locked down their half of the field. Lake View never managed to slip another ball by the defense and fell, 3-2.

Decatur outshot Lake View on the day, 23-14, and 13 shots on goal to Lake View's five. The Chiefs' Sebastian Heredia had a monster performance in the goal with 10 saves.

Coach Jones had nothing but the highest praise for his seniors, who helped the Chiefs secure their 5th straight district title this season.

"These nine seniors that are leaving us, I love every single one of them," Jones continued. "The reason we have five district championships in a row is because of these guys, putting in the work since 8th grade and 9th grade. It's because of them, they set the foundation and set the tone, and now it's up to the underclassmen to carry it forward."

With the loss, the Chiefs' season comes to an end. Lake View finishes its 2025-26 campaign with a 20-3-1 overall record, a district championship and a Bi-District championship.
