Sonora’s Leija Wins State Powerlifting Title to Lead Team’s Top 5 Finish

 

EDINBURG, TX — Sonora’s Jimena Leija won her weight class at the Class 1A/2A state powerlifting meet Wednesday to lead the Lady Broncos to a fourth-place finish in the team standings.

Leija lifted 255 pounds in the squat, 150 in the bench press and 270 in the deadlift for a total of 635 pounds.

Sonora also had a third-place showing from Brysa Parada (250-155-270 — 675) and a fifth-place finish by Fernanda Arredondo (330-225-275 — 830), whose 225-pound bench press set a new state record in her weight class.

Sonora totaled 11 points to finish behind state champion Muenster (20), Kenedy (15) and Santa Maria (12).

The Concho Valley had a runner-up finish from Reagan County’s Savannah Sanchez (260-160-325 — 745), which helped the Lady Owls take 15th in the team standings.

Reagan County’s Reylie Hernandez contributed a fourth-place finish (420-170-385 — 975).

Other top-five showings came from Ozona’s Serenity Briggs, who was third place (385-205-380 — 970), Eldorado’s Yoselyn Fuentes, who was fourth (305-175-295 — 775), and Bangs’ Valerie Razo, who was fourth (220-135-250 — 605).

Concho Valley girls who had top 10 performances included San Saba’s Kalista Lara (6th), Ballinger’s Alivia Jalomo (7th), Eldorado’s Olivia Broome (8th), Reagan County’s Kamryn Gunnels (8th) and Addison Fulton (8th).

The big 3A and small 3A state meets will be held Thursday, along with the unequipped meet for athletes who use the minimal supportive gear. The big 4A and small 4A meets will be held Friday.
