SAN ANGELO, TX — The Sierra Vista Child Development Center just celebrated its first rodeo show on Thursday, March 12. Director Sandy Jameson, administrative assistant Mandee Leech, and music teacher Rachel Toomire, along with members of the PTO board, organized the event in conjunction with a raffle fundraiser to raise money for the school.
The ceremonies kicked off with an invocation by Police Chief Travis Griffith, along with a brief performance by the Angelo State University rodeo team. Then it was off to the races — the pig races. Students were asked to create their own pigs using recycled materials and "race" the pigs by using a stick to guide them down the track. The younger students' game was a bandana scramble, where the 3-year-olds' objective was to pull bandanas from each other's pockets until all of the bandanas had been collected (this is where the term herding cats came from).
Next were the boot scramble, stick horse barrel races and the dosey doe. Students raced to put on scattered boots and run back to the finish line, raced stick horses (with names such as Godzilla, Sprinkles and Brown Spot) around barrels as fast as they could, and then danced to the classic Cotton Eye Joe song.
The event was capped off by the Kona Ice snow cone truck and Semper Fresh Kettle Corn truck for the kids and families. Many hours of preparation went into the event, and Sierra Vista had help from parents, local leaders and more. Funds raised through the coordinating raffle will be used to support the school by purchasing supplies and hosting events for the kids throughout the year.
