Fort Concho Revives History with March Events for All Ages

SAN ANGELO, TX - Fort Concho will host four programs in March that will bring history to life for guests of all ages.

Afternoon Tea

The fort’s staff and living history volunteers will host Afternoon Tea from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 19, in Officers’ Quarters 1. Featured will be period parlor games, a short review of the significance of formal teas, and then the tea and snacks as they would have been served 150 years ago.

The charge is $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-16. Children under 16 are asked to bring their parents with them. Spaces are very limited. Pre-register and pay by calling the fort at 325-481-2646.

Campfire Story Night

The popular Campfire Story Night returns at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19, on the fort’s courtyard behind Barracks 5-6 on Henry O. Flipper Street. This program will focus on stories to mark the nation’s 250th birthday and making s’mores by the campfire.

In case of poor weather, the program will be moved to the nearby Living History Stables classroom. Open to all ages and free of charge.

Meet the People of Fort Concho

As part of the fort’s Spring Break Week programming, guests can meet “The People of Fort Concho,” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 21, on the Barracks 1 porch. There will also be trained volunteer guides in several of the fort’s historic buildings, providing stories about the many men and women, children and others who called Fort Concho home between 1867-89.

The Frontier Ladies Living History Weekend returns March 14-15 featuring a program of speakers discussing the children of the Alamo and families at western frontier posts, as well as hands-on activities including sewing a historical apron and building a hat or bonnet appropriate to the late-19th century.
