KERMIT, TX — One man died and two others were injured in a five-vehicle crash Tuesday night on State Highway 302 east of Kermit, the Winkler County Sheriff's Office stated. A woman died hours later in a separate two-vehicle rear-end collision on the same highway Wednesday morning.
The first crash was reported at 10:05 p.m. Tuesday at mile marker 236, about 11 miles east of Kermit. Authorities initially reported two people dead but later corrected the information, confirming one male deceased after assessment by Winkler County EMS. His next of kin has been notified. Two other people were taken to the Winkler County emergency room with injuries.
The sheriff's office described the incident as a multi-vehicle collision involving rollovers, vehicle fires and entrapments. The scene was cleared and the highway reopened by 5:38 a.m. Wednesday.
A second fatal crash occurred at 5:59 a.m. Wednesday at mile marker 239, about 13 miles east of Kermit. It involved a rear-end collision between a passenger vehicle and a commercial motor vehicle. The female driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead on arrival. The highway was reopened by 9:30 a.m.
No further details about the victims or the cause of either crash were released. The sheriff's office urged drivers to find alternate routes during the closures.
