CANYON, TX – The Angelo State softball team’s chances at a Lone Star Conference regular-season title were ended Saturday by West Texas A&M.
The Rambelles dropped both games in Canyon against the Lady Buffs — 7-5 and 10-2 — to end their 12-game winning streak.
No. 6-ranked WT (44-6 overall, 34-4 LSC) now leads the standings by three games with only two games remaining, while No. 13 ASU (42-11, 31-7) fell into a second-place tie with UT Tyler.
The Belles opened the scoring in Game 1, with Karli Manney drawing a leadoff walk before scoring on a Tatiana Trotter double to left center.
WT scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to take an early lead.
Trotter would hit a two-run home run in the third inning to give ASU a 3-2 lead, but the fourth inning would see WT strike for five runs to make it 7-3.
ASU got things going early in Game 2, with Manney's leadoff single preceding a Trotter two-run HR for the early lead.
WT would score one run in each of the first two innings to tie the game.
The Lady Buffs broke the game open in the fourth with six runs before getting the run-rule win with two runs in the fifth inning.
ASU will face Eastern New Mexico on the road at 2 p.m. Sunday to end the regular season.
