SAN ANGELO, TX — Postseason play is here for the Angelo State University baseball team, and the Rams open the Lone Star Conference Championship with a best-of-three series against Texas A&M-Kingsville this weekend.
Due to inclement weather, the series has been pushed back one day and will now begin on Saturday.
Angelo State (36-14) enters the postseason on a nine-game winning streak after sweeping Cameron University to close the regular season. The Rams’ pitching staff allowed just 15 earned runs over the four-game series. Luke Spencer delivered the longest outing, tossing a complete seven-inning game while allowing one run and striking out nine. Garrett Baumann struck out 10 over five innings of relief, while Johnny Stacy added three scoreless innings.
At the plate, Brett Smajstrla led the surge with a .667 batting average and a 1.714 OPS, contributing to 15 of the Rams’ 37 runs over the weekend. Chase Pendley and Tate Greene each hit above .400, with Pendley recording his first two home runs of the season.
The Rams, ranked No. 12 nationally, are the No. 2 seed in the tournament and hold a 52-34 advantage in the all-time series against the Javelinas. The teams last met in late March, when Angelo State won three of four games in San Angelo.
Scouting Report: Texas A&M-Kingsville
Texas A&M-Kingsville (25-25), the No. 7 seed, enters the postseason after taking three of four games from West Texas A&M University. The Javelinas are hitting .319 as a team and averaging 6.72 runs per game. Nick Reyes leads the lineup with a .343 batting average, while Landon Salinas has a .321 average with team highs in hits (53), runs (42) and doubles (12).
On the mound, Texas A&M-Kingsville owns a 6.08 ERA but leads the Lone Star Conference with 401 strikeouts. Garrett Nail paces the staff with 85 strikeouts, followed by Tyler Schumann, who has 64 and a team-best 4.44 ERA.
Game 1 is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium. Game 2 will be played at 3 p.m. Sunday, with a decisive Game 3, if necessary, scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday.
