Robert Lee, Wall Boys Lead After Day 1 of State Golf Tournament

 

AUSTIN, TX — Two Concho Valley schools are halfway home to a state title after the opening round of the UIL State Golf Championships on Monday.

Robert Lee and Wall both sit atop the leaderboard in their respective classifications.

In the Class 1A tournament at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander, Robert Lee shot a first-round score of 353 to give them a one-shot lead in a tight race.

Brookeland is one shot behind the Steers, while Whitharral is two shots off the lead. Garden City is part of a four-way tie for fourth place just eight shots off the lead.

Robert Lee was led by Brenner Sherwood, whose score of 84 has him in a tie for 12th. Other Steers included Max Garcia (85), Levi Bailey (88), Zach Eubanks (96) and Ryder Tavarez (116).

Wildorado’s Hunter Corman leads the individual standings with a 74, three shots ahead of Texline’s Bo Bradley.

Blackwell’s Brayden Claborn is in a tie for eighth place at 82.

Garden City’s scores were Waylyn Davis (87), Karson Lowery (89), Brik Fryar (91), Cohen Batla (94) and Rylan Cypert (106).

In the Class 3A tournament at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin, defending state champion Wall shot a 304 to give the Hawks a three-shot advantage over Gunter. Cameron Yoe is seven shots back in third.

Wall was consistent, led by Maxwell Wymore’s 73, which has him in seventh. He was followed by Cannon Willard (76), Stratten Abel (76), Kasen Hudson (79) and Cash Yocham (92).

A three-way tie for first in the individual standings includes Idalou’s Kallaway Soto, Nacogdoches Central Heights’ Andrew Bird and Gunter’s Austin Anderson, who shot a 68.

In the 2A tournament at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin, the Mason Punchers are in fourth place after a 310 left them 11 shots off the lead.

Mildred leads with a 299, followed by Crawford (303) and Lipan (310).

Mason was paced by Kalen Langehennig’s 74, followed by Cade Dudney (76), Ryder Balmos (80), Hudson Terrell (80) and Grant Nobles (82). 

There’s a three-way tie in the individual race with Sundown’s Isaiah Igo, Tioga’s Zander Zafar and Windthorst’s Linden Brown all shooting 67.

Defending champion Walt Thompson from Goldthwaite is in a tie for fifth after a 70.

Other area golfers in the field include Sonora’s Jayden Welborn and Reagan County’s John Hodge, who are tied for 32nd after carding an 81.

The second and final round will tee off Tuesday.
