SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State University men’s track and field team is ranked No. 2 in this week’s NCAA Division II national rankings, while the women are ranked No. 14.
The Rams are coming off an impressive showing at the Texas Relays, highlighted by freshman William Opare winning the 200-meter dash in a time of 20.48 seconds, the fastest time in Division II this season.
Opare clipped Clemson's Jalen Johnson for the title by .02 seconds. Opare beat five other D-I competitors and three professional athletes.
The Rams’ 4x400 relay team of Jahleel Armstrong, Rami Balti, Francis Patanpatan and Opare also ran the second-fastest time in school history at the Texas Relays in 3:06.24. It was also the fastest time in the nation in D-II this year.
The Rams trail only Grand Valley State for the top spot in the national rankings by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Rams and Belles combined to provisionally qualify for the national meet in 10 events at the Texas Relays. Through four meets, they’ve combined for 38 provisional marks.
A provisional qualification means an athlete is eligible to be invited to the national meet, though they haven’t automatically qualified.
The Rams and Belles are in action this weekend at the War Hawk Classic at McMurry University in Abilene.
