MIAMI, FL — Former San Angelo Central pitcher Davis Martin picked up his first win of the year Monday in his season debut for the Chicago White Sox.
Martin allowed five hits and three runs in five innings of work as the White Sox beat the Miami Marlins 9-4. He had six strikeouts and two walks.
Chicago, which had the second-worst record in Major League Baseball last year, had lost its first three games this season before Monday’s breakthrough.
Martin, 29, graduated from Central in 2015 and debuted in the majors in 2022. He missed all of 2023 after Tommy John surgery.
He had a breakout season last year and started 25 games. He posted a 4.10 ERA and an opponent’s batting average of .251 but won only seven games while pitching for one of the league’s worst teams.
Monday’s win was the 11th victory of Martin’s career.
Martin is slated to pitch again at 1:10 p.m. Sunday at home against Toronto.
