WALL, TX — The No. 7 Wall Hawks took care of business in unseasonably abysmal weather to move closer to a district title against Merkle on Friday night. After falling behind early, the Hawks (15-7) took advantage of a monstrous 2nd inning to claim a 14-2 victory over the Badgers (9-6) after four innings.
Battling temperatures in the 40's with winds and rain to match, the Wall Hawks dominated the district matchup. Gage Reichenau delivered a gem on the mound, allowing three hits and two runs in four innings. He added seven strikeouts and a walk in the win.
Merkel took the lead in the top of the 1st inning. Reichenau allowed two singles and an RBI before a passed ball would score the second run. Wall responded well with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st. After that, it was all Hawks.
Wall scored 10 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Jacob Braden singled, scoring one. Kellan Oliver doubled, collecting two RBIs, before Wyatt Jost singled to score two more. Lawson Dankworth walked, scoring one with bases loaded, before Haygyn Barbee blew the game open with another 2-RBI single. Braden came back up to the plate and grounded out, but not before scoring one more run.
Despite the weather, the Hawks continue to find a way to win. This will continue to be the team to beat moving forward as the defending state champions move throughout district play.
The No. 7 Hawks return to action on Tuesday in a rematch with the Badgers, this time, in Merkel. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
