NEW ORLEANS, LA – Angelo State freshman William Opare was named the South Central Regional Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Monday.
Opare, from Accra, Ghana, was the high-point scorer at the NCAA Division II National Indoor Championships with 20.5 points as he led the Rams to a fourth-place team finish.
Opare won the 400-meter dash and was second in the 200-meter dash. His time of 45.67 seconds in the 400 was the second-fastest in NCAA D-II history.
Opare also anchored the 4x400 relay to a national title in a time of 3:07.22, which was again the second-fastest time in D-II history.
Opare is the first ASU athlete since the award's inception in 2016 to win the honor.
