Angelo State Track Returns Home With 2 National Titles

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — The Angelo State track and field teams wrapped up their time at the Division II Indoor National Championships in Virginia Beach on Saturday, highlighted by the performances of William Opare, who claimed the 400-meter national title, finished second in the 200, and anchored the Rams' 4x400 relay as they made the comeback to win the title in that event as well.

The Rams finished with 33 points to place fourth in the team standings. The Rams claimed seven first-team All-American performances and a second-team All-American showing, while the Rambelles claimed five second-team All-American awards.

Opare and Rami Balti kicked off ASU’s day Saturday by running in the 400 finals, where Opare defeated Grand Valley State's Joshua Page, the defending national champion in the event, with a time of 45.67, which is the second-fastest time ever run in Division II.

Balti improved on his prelim time from Friday, finishing with a time of 46.48 seconds as he finished fourth overall in the event.

Opare returned to the track about 45 minutes later to compete in the 200 finals, where he finished second overall to Catawba's Miles Stephens, who clocked a 20.76 to Opare's 20.81.

About an hour later, the 4x400 relay team of Taylor Briggs, Balti, Bautista Diamante and Opare clocked a time of 3:07.22 — the second-fastest time ever in Division II — to give the Rams their second national championship of the weekend. They were just four one-hundredths of a second off the record.
