STERLING CITY, TX — The Sterling City Eagles are looking for a new head football coach and athletic director as they prepare for their return to the six-man level.
Kelan Luker, who was named the school’s football coach and AD less than a year ago, is no longer with the school.
Superintendent Rudy Rudewick didn’t respond to a request for information about Luker’s departure or the ongoing coaching search.
Sterling City struggled to a 1-9 season last year in its final season of 11-man football. The Eagles previously made the playoffs in their other three years of 11-man since moving up in 2022.
As a six-man program, Sterling City won the state title in 2020 and reached the state quarterfinals in 2021.
Luker, who previously coached at six-man Gustine and is the son of legendary Panther Creek coach Alan Luker, was expected to help lead Sterling City back into the six-man game.
He was best known as the quarterback for Stephenville when it won the state title in 1998. He was even named Dave Campbell’s Texas Football “Quarterback of the Decade” for the 1990s.
In February, Sterling City was realigned next school year into a football district with Water Valley, Borden County, Grady and Loraine.
