ASU Ram Media Wins 11 Awards at TIPA Convention

 

SAN ANGELO, TX - Representatives of Angelo State University's student-run Ram Media outlets brought home 11 awards after competing in various contests at the recent Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) Convention in Denton.

The TIPA journalism/media competition consists of two parts - the Annual Contest that solicits submission of entries previously published or broadcast in the past academic year, and the Live Contests that take place between students attending the convention.

In the Annual Contest against entries from other mid-size, four-year universities, students from the ASU Ram Page digital newspaper and Ram TV won the following awards:

  • Jacob Flint of San Angelo - 1st Place in Editorial (Ram Page)
  • Aubrie Aguilar of Marfa - 2nd Place in General News Story (Ram TV)
  • Ram TV - 2nd Place in Video Newscast
  • Serena Reese of Robert Lee - Honorable Mention in Feature Story (Ram Page)
  • Haylie Anicama of San Angelo - Honorable Mention in Graphic Illustration (Ram Page)
  • Serena Reese and Anaomy Somoll of Phnom Penh, Cambodia - Honorable Mention in Sports Game Story (Ram Page)

In the Live Contests against students from institutions of all sizes, ASU students won the following awards:

  • Serena Reese - 1st Place in Live PR Release Writing
  • Jennifer "JJ" Jones of Rising Star - 1st Place in Live News Photo
  • Ram Media - 2nd Place in Hype Video
  • Alejandro "AJ" Garcia of Del Rio - 3rd Place in Live Sports Action Photo
  • Jennifer "JJ" Jones - Honorable Mention in Live TV Advertising

"The Communication and Mass Media Department is incredibly proud of this success at the TIPA Convention," said Dr. Benjamin Brojakowski, department chair. "These awards reflect the hard work of students and faculty in the classroom and our Ram Media outlets. TIPA is also a great learning and networking opportunity for the students. We are already looking forward to attending TIPA again next year."

Aguilar and Anicama are studio art majors, Flint is a political science major, Garcia and Jones are communication majors, and Reese and Somoll are computer science majors.

Ram Media is a component of the Department of Communication and Mass Media. The student-run outlets include the Ram TV television station that broadcasts locally on Optimum Cable Channel 6, the Ram Page digital newspaper and the Ram Radio internet radio station, as well as Ram TV Sports that broadcasts live ASU intercollegiate sports on the FloSports Network.
