Severe Thunderstorms, Flash Flooding Possible This Weekend

SAN ANGELO, TX — Scattered thunderstorms are forecast to develop across west and west-central Texas on Saturday, with some storms possibly becoming strong to severe and capable of producing large hail up to 1 inch in diameter, damaging winds of 60 mph or higher and localized flooding, the National Weather Service office in San Angelo said Thursday.

The highest risk is a Slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe weather across much of the area west of a line from near Sweetwater to Junction, including San Angelo, according to the NWS Storm Prediction Center. Areas east of that line, including Abilene and Brownwood, are under a Marginal risk. Storms are expected to form Saturday afternoon and continue through overnight hours, with the strongest activity from mid-afternoon into late night.

A Marginal risk of excessive rainfall also exists Saturday and Sunday, which could lead to flash flooding in some locations. The highest rain chances will occur late Saturday afternoon into Saturday night.

On Sunday, severe thunderstorms remain possible across most of the region, while a strong-to-severe threat is possible Monday across the far northeast Big Country, the NWS said. Forecasters cautioned that the Sunday and Monday outlook remains uncertain because it is still several days away.

Today, Thursday, will be partly to mostly cloudy with a low (20%) chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms, mainly in southern areas. South to southeast winds will blow at 10 to 20 mph. High temperatures are expected in the upper 70s to low 80s.

Temperatures will remain near to slightly above normal through the middle of next week, with highs generally in the upper 70s to mid-80s. Additional showers and thunderstorms are possible early next week.
