SAN ANGELO, TX — National Weather Service forecasters warned Wednesday that high temperatures Friday through Sunday will not only shatter daily records in Abilene and San Angelo but also approach or exceed the hottest temperatures ever recorded so early in the year at both sites.
The agency’s San Angelo office said afternoon highs are forecast to reach 96 degrees Friday, 98 Saturday and 99 Sunday in Abilene — topping the previous records of 94 degrees set in 1916, 98 in 1921 and 92 in 1934. In San Angelo, the forecast calls for 96 Friday, 98 Saturday and 97 Sunday, surpassing records of 91 degrees in 2017, 95 in 2017 and 92 in 2023.
The hottest day ever recorded between Jan. 1 and March 31 at either location is 98 degrees — set in Abilene on March 21, 1916, and in San Angelo on March 17, 1908. Forecasters said this weekend’s readings are likely to challenge or break that mark as well.
A significant warming trend is already underway. Extended forecasts show temperatures climbing from the low 80s Wednesday into the upper 90s by Friday, with Abilene reaching 97 Saturday and 98 Sunday, and San Angelo hitting 98 Saturday and 97 Sunday. Other area communities, including Sweetwater, Haskell and Ballinger, are also expected to see near-triple-digit highs Saturday and Sunday.
Overnight lows will remain mild, ranging from the upper 50s to low 60s through the weekend.
