SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man was booked into the Tom Green County Jail early Saturday after he allegedly struck his wife in the head and face several times with an 8-pound dumbbell.
Ricardo Arevalo, 41, was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked at 5:23 a.m. April 18, according to the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office inmate roster. He remains in custody with a $150,000 bond.
According to a Tom Green County affidavit, San Angelo police officers were dispatched to a residence on West Beauregard Avenue about 4:18 a.m. in response to a domestic disturbance.
A police sergeant told an investigator that a female subject had been struck in the head several times with an 8-pound dumbbell. Officers found the woman in the living room, covered in blood.
The victim was taken to Shannon Medical Center, where an investigator observed dried blood on her chest and near her left eye, large swelling around the outside of her left eye and blood on the back of her head from several lacerations caused by the dumbbell.
The woman told investigators she was assaulted by her common-law husband, Arevalo, with the dumbbell. She said the couple had been drinking alcoholic beverages earlier when Arevalo announced he was going to bed. When she asked why he was going to bed and received no answer, she turned her back and he struck her multiple times in the head and face, the affidavit states.
She told investigators she changed shirts before medics arrived and that the shirt she wore during the incident was covered in blood.
Arevalo was detained at the scene by San Angelo police but refused to speak with investigators about the incident and would not consent to a search of the residence, the affidavit states.
