6 Killed, 10 Injured After Multiple Shootings in Amarillo

AMARILLO, TX — Six people were killed and 10 others were injured after four shootings Sunday in Amarillo.

One man was responsible for shootings at two different locations.

Dustin Johnson, 41, killed two people during what was reported as an attempted robbery at a storage facility.

He then led law enforcement on a short chase before evading them.

About 30 minutes later, police received multiple 911 calls at a residence, where Johnson had driven his vehicle into the house, injuring multiple people.

He then began shooting and eventually injured six people, one of whom died.

Johnson then shot at officers, who returned fire and killed him.

Another shooting occurred at a house party when a man was asked to leave and opened fire with an AR-style rifle outside.

More than 40 shots were reportedly fired, and two people were injured.

The suspect left the scene and was still actively on the run as of Tuesday.

The other shooting also occurred at a residence, where James Pena, 40, opened fire on family members in his home.

Pena, who was wearing body armor and armed with an AR-15 and a handgun, injured three family members and killed two others.

Pena was taken into custody and charged with capital murder of multiple persons.

Police said three officers were placed on administrative duty after the chaotic day.

“As a police leader, these (shootings) concern me," Police Chief Thomas Hover said. "Just one is too many, and we’ve had several in one weekend.”

Hover said his department will partner with other agencies to increase the presence of law enforcement in the city to try and curtail the spike in violence.
