SAN ANGELO, TX — A dog bakery has set up shop right here in San Angelo.
Curious & Coward Dog Bakery offers a variety of homemade soft dog treats and “pup cakes," which are cakes made with dogs in mind.
Owner and operator Evelyn Gordon said her rescue dogs inspired her to get a brick-and-mortar shop that sells soft and easy-to-eat dog treats.
“I started making softer dog treats, because we have an older dog and she lost a lot of teeth, and the traditional treats on the market are just too hard for her," Gordon said. "So, I started making soft treats, and during COVID is when it really kicked in.”
At first, Curious & Coward was at the farmer’s market in Odessa. When Gordon moved back to San Angelo, she decided to open a store with her sister and mother.
All the dog treats that Curious & Coward offers are homemade, natural and organic, so they need to be placed in a refrigerator or cooler. Also, there are no artificial coloring or flavors added to the treats.
Along with dog treats and pup cakes, Curious & Coward also offers jewelry and t-shirts because they got their start at farmer’s markets. Gordon’s sister makes car freshies, and her mother makes jewelry.
“My mom is in jewelry and my sister started making (car) freshies, and then people started saying ‘Hey girl, it’d be really cool if you started making t-shirts’, so she started making t-shirts and she makes special orders,” said Gordon, “Just a little family business."
The dog treats in-store range in price from $10 to $13, and the sweet potato pup cakes go for $16. The variety of treat flavors range from chicken, bacon, blueberry, pumpkin and, of course, peanut butter. They also offer a selection of leashes and dog toys. The other side of the store offers books, jewelry, car freshies and t-shirts, among other homemade items.
Curious & Coward Dog Bakery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at 2503 South Johnson Street.
